Browser games with controller support include Mars Rally Championship, a free browser rally game, plus Slow Roads, Tanuki Sunset Classic, Smash Karts, HexGL, Shell Shockers and the surf game built into Microsoft Edge, each confirmed by its developer, a wiki or its source code. Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW stream console and PC games into a tab and take a pad too. PolyTrack, the popular browser time trial, does not read one, and its developer has said why. Any other game reads a pad only if its developer wrote the code to.
Can you use a controller on browser games?
Yes, in any current desktop browser, but only in games written to read one. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all implement the Gamepad API, the web standard that lets a page read a pad's buttons, sticks and triggers. Plenty of games never call it, which is why the same pad drives one tab and sits dead in the next.
Reading the pad is not the same as reading it well: the API reports a standard pad's triggers as analog values, and a game can still treat each one as an on-off switch.
Getting the pad connected is a separate job with its own traps — browsers hide a pad from the page until you press a button on it — and how to play browser racing games with a controller covers it step by step. This page is about which games read it.
Browser games with controller support, verified one by one
Every game here reads a pad natively, and each entry says where that is documented. Mars Rally Championship is first because it is ours; the other driving and racing games come next, then everything else.
Mars Rally Championship
Our game, listed first for that reason. This is Mars Rally Championship's own site; everything below it is ranked on its merits, driving and racing games first.
Mars Rally Championship is a free 3D rally game that runs in a browser tab with no download and no account. It reads any pad that reports the standard layout — left stick to steer, RT throttle, LT brake, A handbrake, LB and RB for gears, Y back to the last gate — and treats the stick and both triggers as analog, with deadzones and a steer curve you can tune.
What it does badly with a pad: there is no rumble, because the haptics setting vibrates phones, not controllers. The pad's buttons are fixed to the standard layout, while the keyboard's driving keys can be rebound. Pause and settings have no pad button, and Start restarts the stage, which console habit will punish exactly once. Steering wheels are not supported, and there are two stages to drive, not a season.
Play free — no downloadSlow Roads
Slow Roads, by the developer Anslo, is an endless drive through procedurally generated scenery: no opponents, no timer, just road. Anslo announced controller and steering-wheel support in December 2022, and the game's itch.io page names Logitech's G920 as a wheel that works, without force feedback.
The web version at slowroads.io is free and, according to its Steam page, has carried no ads, microtransactions or paywalls since its 2022 launch. The paid Steam version, out since 23 September 2026, adds high-resolution textures the web version lacks.
Tanuki Sunset Classic
Tanuki Sunset Classic, by Rewind Games, is a retro-themed arcade game about a raccoon on a longboard. Its itch.io page says the game was designed for a controller first, with the keyboard secondary: the rare browser game where the pad is the intended input. The browser build is the classic version; the full game is on Steam.
Smash Karts
Smash Karts is a free kart battle game of short arena rounds, weapon pickups and live opponents. It reads a pad only once you ask: according to the Smash Karts wiki, open Settings → Controls and tick Gamepad Controls. CrazyGames lists it under its Controller tag too. Open it when friends with pads want to hit each other.
HexGL
HexGL is a futuristic racer that Thibaut Despoulain built in 2012 on WebGL and three.js, open source under the MIT licence. Its start screen has a Controls setting that reads KEYBOARD by default, and the source on GitHub includes a gamepad controller to switch to. The author's README says development is on hiatus, so test the pad mode before relying on it.
Shell Shockers
Shell Shockers, Blue Wizard Digital's egg-themed multiplayer shooter, has a separate controller tab in its settings for Xbox or PS4 keybinds, apart from the PC keys, as the Shell Shockers wiki documents. It is the only shooter here whose pad support could be confirmed.
The surf game built into Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge ships a surfing game at edge://surf. Microsoft's announcement says it supports Xbox, PlayStation and Switch Pro controllers and the Xbox Adaptive Controller, with rumble. It is the one game here documented to rumble, which is more than Mars Rally Championship can say, and it only runs in Edge.

Read the last column: a developer's statement, a wiki page and a portal's tag are different grades of evidence, and few controller lists say which they rely on.
Why PolyTrack does not support a controller
PolyTrack does not read a pad, and that is a decision, not an oversight. Its developer, Kodub, has explained on the game's itch.io community board that analog steering would be an advantage over keyboard controls on a shared leaderboard, and that separate pad and keyboard boards would be a lot of work and easy to cheat, since a pad run could be submitted to the keyboard board. Kodub also wrote that the community seemed mostly against the idea. The 0.6.0 update of March 2026 added experimental multiplayer and car customisation, not a controller.
Some unofficial PolyTrack sites describe controller setups; for the official game, the developer's posts are the authority, and they explain why it has none. PolyTrack is still the reference browser time trial — the PolyTrack comparison explains why — so play it on keys.
Mars Rally Championship took the other side of the same trade. Pad, keyboard and touch runs share one board with no device column, so it cannot say whether a pad is quicker. Every run's inputs are recorded 60 times a second, with 256 levels of throttle and brake, and the server re-simulates them before posting a time, so a pad run is verified exactly as the pad drove it. Both answers are defensible: PolyTrack's protects keyboard times; Mars Rally Championship's lets a pad time stand beside them.
Why analog triggers matter in a racing game
A key is a switch; a trigger reports how far it is pulled. That is the real divide among browser racing games with controller support, and in Mars Rally Championship, where keyboard and touch brakes are all or nothing, it decides how you drive a corner.
Braking from 100 km/h on the game's regolith takes about 125 metres and 9 seconds, because the whole grip budget is about 3.1 m/s² in 3.72 m/s² gravity. In a straight line the ABS holds each tyre at the peak of its grip, so a full pedal is right. Turning in is different: steer with the brake held and the ABS shares each tyre's grip between slowing and turning, so the rover turns while it slows, and every bit of brake is cornering grip the corner cannot have. A trigger lets you carry a quarter of the pedal into the turn-in and bleed it off as the rover rotates. On keys the brake is all or nothing, so you either finish braking before the turn-in or pulse the key.
Both triggers are read independently, and the physics nets the motor's push against the brake at every wheel, so squeezing both at once is left-foot braking the simulation actually models rather than an input it discards.
Steering works the same way: an arrow key asks for full lock or none; the stick can ask for a fifth of it, and the 1.6 steer curve makes the first part of its travel finer still. In games where a Scandinavian flick works, that is what lets the feint be a half push of the stick rather than full lock; in Mars Rally Championship, the handbrake does the rotating instead.
Cloud gaming puts console and PC games in a tab, at a price
Cloud gaming is the other route: the game runs on a server and the tab shows a video stream, so a service's console and PC games play in a tab with a pad. The price is a subscription or a time limit, an account, and a round trip to a data centre on every input, which a racing game feels more than most.
Xbox Cloud Gaming plays at xbox.com/play in Edge, Chrome or Safari; Firefox is not on Microsoft's supported list. Microsoft recommends its own Xbox Wireless Controller and lists others that work, PlayStation pads among them. It comes with Game Pass Essential, Premium and Ultimate, and Microsoft announced on 3 September 2026 that from November each tier gets a monthly allowance of cloud hours: 15 on Ultimate, 10 on Premium and 5 on Essential, with extra hours sold in the Xbox Store to subscribers and non-subscribers alike.
GeForce NOW streams PC games you already own, such as a Steam library, at play.geforcenow.com in Chrome on Windows and macOS. Its free membership caps a session at one hour, shows ads before you play and queues you behind paying members. For a pad player, the two services are the widest shelf a browser tab can reach.
How to check any other browser game yourself
Open the game, click into its tab, press a face button, then move the stick. If the game responds, it reads the pad. For the triggers, get rolling first, then barely squeeze the throttle: if the car surges as hard as it does at a full pull, the game reads a switch; anything gentler means the trigger is analog.
Two shelves come pre-sorted. On itch.io, developers declare their inputs, so filtering web games by "Gamepad (any)" or "Xbox controller" lists what developers vouch for. CrazyGames keeps a Controller tag whose racing entries include Super Star Car, Madalin Cars Multiplayer and Highway Racer; that is the portal's label, not a test, so check anyway.
Krunker, Venge.io and Bloxd.io appear on other controller lists, but their pad support could not be confirmed from a developer source, so none is in the table.
For a game that ignores pads, a key-mapping utility can turn the pad into key presses, but the game still sees a keyboard, so the trigger becomes a switch again: more comfortable, no more precise.
Where to try this
Mars Rally Championship reads a trigger as a brake pedal and starts from a link with no download and no account. Tune the stick and triggers in the settings panel, then feel what a feathered brake does in the three-minute Proving Ground tutorial. To race friends with pads, online rooms put up to eight pilots on one stage from a shared link. For the wider shelf, pad or not, see the best free browser racing games.
