Mars Rally Championship, a free browser rally game whose free roam mode has no timer and no checkpoints, is listed first because it is ours. The best free roam driving games in a browser, on merit: Slow Roads for an endless road, Free Rally for an open city shared with other players, City Car Driving Simulator for night traffic, Offroad Island for off-road maps with optional jobs, Madalin Stunt Cars 3 for stunt arenas, and the 3D Driving Simulator on Google Maps for real streets. All run in a browser tab, nothing to install; the portal-hosted ones carry ads.
In-game screenshot: free roam at sunset, with no gates, no timer and no route; the only line on the ground is the one the rover's tires pressed.
- Low-gravity off-road exploration: Mars Rally Championship's free roam (ours, listed first).
- Endless road, nothing asked of you: Slow Roads.
- An open city with other players in it: Free Rally.
- Traffic to drive among: City Car Driving Simulator.
- Off-road maps with jobs if you want them: Offroad Island.
- Stunt arenas, alone or in a lobby: Madalin Stunt Cars 3.
- Real streets anywhere on Earth: 3D Driving Simulator on Google Maps.
Free roam, open world or endless road: which one you want
Four different things get called free roam, and a game's thumbnail rarely says which one you are getting.
- Free roam is a mode: a map with the clock switched off. Mars Rally Championship's free roam and Madalin Stunt Cars 3's single-player are this.
- Open world is a large map with optional jobs, traffic or other players. Free Rally, City Car Driving Simulator and Offroad Island are this.
- Endless road is a road generated as you drive that never ends. Slow Roads is this.
- Real-world map is driving over map data of real places. The 3D Driving Simulator on Google Maps is this.
Most free roam lists mix all four, which is why map type is the first column after the name in the table below. The type decides more about an evening than the car does: an endless road asks you to relax and a stunt arena asks you to jump things.
Diagram: the four map types sold as free roam, whether each one ends, and this list's games under each; only the endless road never does.
Free roam driving games compared
Mars Rally Championship is first because it is ours; the rest are grouped by map type. Every row runs with no download, so the table has no column for it; Slow Roads also sells optional paid downloads.
Method: each game was checked against its developer page, a portal listing (CrazyGames, Playgama, itch.io) or press coverage, not played for this page. Where a listing does not say, the table says not confirmed. Mars Rally Championship's details come from its own code. Last checked: October 2026.
| Game | Map type | Objectives | Traffic | Multiplayer | Phone browser | Controller | Account | Ads |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mars Rally Championship Play | 2.5 km square of sculpted Martian terrain | None in free roam; stages are timed | None | Not in free roam; stage races, up to 8 | Yes, touch, landscape | Yes | No | None |
| Slow Roads | Endless generated road, seeded | None; has autodrive | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Yes, touch on slowroads.io | Per itch.io, wheels too | Not confirmed | None, per the developer |
| Free Rally | Open city | None set | Not confirmed | Yes, shared server | Yes | Not confirmed | No; optional CrazyGames login | Portal ads |
| City Car Driving Simulator | City at night | None | Yes, no pedestrians | No (the Online edition: yes) | No, desktop only | Not confirmed | No; optional CrazyGames login | Portal ads |
| Offroad Island | Three open off-road maps | Optional: missions, gold, races | Not confirmed | No, single-player | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | No; optional CrazyGames login | Portal ads |
| Madalin Stunt Cars 3 | Three stunt maps | None | Not confirmed | Yes, lobbies and public rooms | No | Not confirmed | No; a name for lobbies | Not confirmed |
| 3D Driving Simulator on Google Maps | Real-world map data; nothing to hit | None | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Yes, virtual joystick | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Not confirmed |
Only Slow Roads generates its road forever; the Google Maps simulator borrows the real world, and every other map has edges. Only Free Rally and Madalin Stunt Cars 3 are confirmed to put other players on the map, plus City Car Driving Simulator's separate Online edition. Every game on CrazyGames is ad-funded: a Google case study puts advertising at 99% of that portal's revenue.
Free roam driving games you can play in a browser
Mars Rally Championship is first because it is ours; the rest are grouped by map type, from the endless road to real streets.
Mars Rally Championship: low-gravity free roam on Mars
Our game, listed first for that reason. This is Mars Rally Championship's own site; everything below it is grouped by map type and ranked on its merits.
Mars Rally Championship is a rally game first, and free roam is a mode: a 2.5 km square of terrain sculpted to Martian morphologies, with no timer, no checkpoints and one pickup-truck-sized rover. It runs in a browser tab with no download, no install, no account and no ads. A run starts in the helmet camera, and C cycles through 15 cameras.
Pick it for off-road exploration under 0.38 g. Gravity is 3.72 m/s², 38% of Earth's, so a crest throws the rover into a long, slow arc, and a tire sliding sideways ploughs into loose regolith, which is why a drift bites there. The dust its wheels throw settles where it lands. It is the only Mars entry here.
What it does badly as a free roam game: the map ends at the edge of the square. There is one vehicle, no traffic, no autodrive and no other players, because online rooms race stages rather than roam. Nothing you do there is scored or counted toward streaks and career totals. It is not a sandbox, and at speed the low grip wants attention: braking from 100 km/h takes about 125 m.
Play free — no downloadSlow Roads: the road that never ends
Slow Roads, by the solo developer Anslo, has run free at slowroads.io since 2022. It is the endless road: generated from a seed, with no objective and no way to fail, and an autodrive that can steer for you. Its itch.io page implies touch works on slowroads.io and lists controller and wheel support, without force feedback. The developer says the web version stays free and ad-free. The limit for a free roam player: it is a road you follow, not a map you explore. Traffic, multiplayer and accounts are not confirmed. For calm alternatives, see games like Slow Roads.
Free Rally: an open city with other drivers
Free Rally, by oneru220 on CrazyGames since September 2019, drops you into a large open city with eight vehicles, among them a bus, a sedan and a dune buggy. Other players join a shared server, where you can race them or try to wreck their cars, and nothing is set for you to do. It runs in desktop and mobile browsers.
Free Rally 2, from the same developer, has nine vehicles, including a helicopter, a police car and a supercar. The police car unlocks a capture mechanic for chasing other players, and a June 2020 update added on-foot exploration. Its listing names desktop browsers; a phone browser is not confirmed. The limits come with strangers: no structure, and anyone can wreck you. Traffic is not confirmed.
City Car Driving Simulator: night traffic and no goals
City Car Driving Simulator, by BoneCracker Games, is on CrazyGames. Its listing describes a realistic car simulation set at night in a city, with traffic on the road but no pedestrians, where you roam with no set goals. It dates from January 2018. The limit: the browser version is desktop-only and always at night.
A separate game from the same studio, City Car Driving Simulator: Online, was released in January 2024. It is a multiplayer game where you customize cars, earn money by driving, face police chases and race or drift with friends, in desktop and mobile browsers. Its last listed update is December 2024.
Offroad Island: three off-road maps, jobs optional
Offroad Island, from Hihoy Games, is on CrazyGames and Playgama, with a release listed as March 2024 on one and August 2024 on the other. Trucks, trailers, quads, side-by-sides, tracked vehicles and motorbikes cover three open-world maps; the listings name Woodlands and MuddyHill. Goals are optional: explore, collect gold or complete races, and Playgama mentions red-dot missions that pay for vehicle upgrades. It is single-player, and a phone browser is not confirmed. For more rough ground, see off-road games online.
Madalin Stunt Cars 3: stunt arenas, alone or in a lobby
Madalin Stunt Cars 3, by Madalin Games, has run in browsers since February 2018, and the studio hosts it at madalingames.com. It has three maps: Stunt Arena, Dockyard and a Racetrack. Single-player sends you straight to a map to roam. Multiplayer lets you pick a name, then create a lobby for friends or join public rooms. It has dozens of cars; sources disagree on the exact count. Its own site dates the last update to November 2025. The limits: no goal at all, and it is listed as no mobile.
3D Driving Simulator on Google Maps: real streets, loosely
The 3D Driving Simulator on Google Maps is a free browser toy by Frame Synthesis, a Tokyo studio, hosted on its play page. You drive a car in third person over a map drawn with the Google Maps JavaScript API, with arrow keys on a PC and a virtual joystick on phones and tablets. Views switch between map, satellite and hybrid, and recommended locations are one click away.
The car drives over the map surface without obstacles such as walls or trees, so this is a loose approximation, not a physics simulator. A 2021 Japanese report said it sometimes hit the Google Maps API usage limit and failed to load; its current status is not confirmed.
A driveable website: Bruno Simon's portfolio
Bruno Simon's portfolio is not a game, but it is a free roam you can drive: a developer's portfolio built as a small 3D world with a car to steer around it. The 2019 original was a simple Three.js world where visitors could drive a red car and crash into things. It has since been rebuilt on Three.js's WebGPU path, and Awwwards published a case study on 11 March 2026. Its phone, controller and multiplayer support are not confirmed.
Open world car games with no download: phones, controllers and friends
On a phone, four of the seven work as far as the listings say: Slow Roads (touch, on slowroads.io), Free Rally, the Google Maps simulator (virtual joystick) and Mars Rally Championship (touch controls, in landscape). City Car Driving Simulator's original is desktop-only, Madalin Stunt Cars 3 is listed as no mobile, and Offroad Island in a phone browser is not confirmed. On a Chromebook, see racing games for a Chromebook browser.
Diagram: what each listing confirms for phone, controller, account and ads; controller support is the gap, unconfirmed for five of the seven games.
For a controller, Mars Rally Championship reads a gamepad in the browser's standard mapping. Slow Roads' itch.io listing says it is controller-compatible, but that is the Web Edition page; slowroads.io itself is not separately confirmed, and neither are the other games. Browser racing games with controller support has the longer list.
For friends, the options are Free Rally's shared server, Madalin Stunt Cars 3's lobbies and City Car Driving Simulator: Online. Mars Rally Championship's free roam is solo; its online rooms race stages with up to 8 pilots, which is a different thing.
No download still has costs. The CrazyGames games are ad-funded, and its accounts are optional: guests can play. A 3D world also streams its data when it loads; a Mars Rally Championship stage streams about 9 MB of terrain.
Free roam as a download, for comparison: BeamNG.drive
BeamNG.drive's free roam is the reference sandbox for soft-body driving, and it is a paid download, not a browser game: $24.99 on Steam in the US, for Windows and Linux. Its PlayStation 5 version enters early access on 19 October 2026, free roam included. Multiplayer exists only through the community mod BeamMP, and every player needs their own copy. There is no browser version; BeamNG in a browser sorts what is real from what only uses its name.
Which free roam game to open first
With a phone and ten minutes, open Slow Roads or Free Rally; both are listed as working in a phone browser.
With friends in a group chat, Free Rally puts everyone on one shared server, and a Madalin Stunt Cars 3 lobby suits a group on desktops; anyone on a phone is left out of the second.
If you want nothing to happen, Slow Roads and its autodrive are the closest thing to a screensaver you can steer. If you want somewhere to go, Offroad Island gives you three maps and optional jobs, the Google Maps simulator gives you a street you know, and Mars Rally Championship gives you a square of sculpted Martian terrain with nothing counted.
Diagram: this list's games by what the map asks of you and who else is on it; most set nothing, and only Offroad Island offers jobs alone.
Where to try this
- Free roam in Mars Rally Championship: no timer, no checkpoints, a 2.5 km square of sculpted Martian terrain.
- Games like Slow Roads for the calm-driving shortlist, browser and download.
- Off-road games online for more rough-ground driving.
- Low-gravity games for how weaker gravity changes what a car does.
