A time-trial racing game pits you against a clock, a target time or a ghost of a previous run, never against cars you can hit. The ones worth opening in a browser tab are Mars Rally Championship, our own free browser rally game, whose leaderboard re-simulates every submitted run from its recorded inputs before the time posts; PolyTrack, for short low-poly tracks; and DashCraft.io, where every opponent is another player's ghost. Trackmania is the deepest time attack, but it is a download.

The quick picks
- Board times checked before they post: Mars Rally Championship (ours). Every submitted run is re-simulated on the server, and any board run can be watched or raced.
- Pure time attack in a browser tab: PolyTrack. Short tracks, up to 10 ghosts, a track editor.
- Racing other players' tracks: DashCraft.io. Every opponent is a player's ghost; listed for desktop only.
- Obstacle-course time trial: Moto X3M. Stars come from finish time.
- Best overall, if you will install it: Trackmania (2020), with free Starter access.
- Stage-rally time trial to download: art of rally, with daily and weekly challenge boards.
What counts as a time-trial racing game
A time trial puts one car, yours, against a number; other cars are recordings you drive straight through. Three families differ in what the clock rewards.
Diagram: the three kinds of time trial on one clock; an obstacle level takes seconds, while a rally stage takes more than a minute even at gold pace.
Pure time attack
The tracks are short and purpose-built, a run lasts from seconds to a minute or two, and restarting is the whole game. PolyTrack, DashCraft.io, Track Racer IO and Trackmania live here.
Stage rally
Each run is one pass over a longer stage, and the corner you cannot see yet is the problem. Mars Rally Championship has three stages, with gold times of 1:12.8 on Stage 3, 2:24.2 on Stage 2 and 2:47.3 on Stage 1. Stage 1 is a loop whose finish gate stands 9 m from the start position; Stages 2 and 3 run point to point. Rally Point and art of rally belong here too.
Obstacle courses
These are physics courses graded by finish time, where a crash costs seconds rather than ending the run. Moto X3M is the browser example. Pass-or-fail courses with no clock, such as Drive Mad, are puzzles rather than time trials.
What makes a time trial worth replaying
Six parts decide whether a time trial keeps you for a week or an evening.
Restart speed. PolyTrack restarts on R or Enter. In Mars Rally Championship, R restarts straight onto the start line with no countdown, and T returns you to the last gate cleared with the timer still running. Trackmania's defaults are Delete to give up and Backspace to respawn at the last checkpoint, both remappable.
Diagram: where a retry key puts you after a crash: the start line for a new run, or the last gate, where Mars Rally Championship's clock keeps running.
Medals and target times. A medal says whether a run was good; a leaderboard says only where you rank. Trackmania has bronze, silver, gold and author; Mars Rally Championship derives the first three from route length at 9, 12.5 and 16 metres per second. Moto X3M gives one to three stars.
Ghosts. PolyTrack can race or watch up to 10 at once, DashCraft.io builds its whole field from them, and Mars Rally Championship races the top three board runs together when its rival field is on. Ghost racing games covers the mechanics.
Leaderboards. Mars Rally Championship re-simulates every submission on the server. PolyTrack's developer says an automated service verifies runs after a delay, and the game can hide non-verified results. Many browser games publish no method; racing games with leaderboards goes through the difference.
Track editors. PolyTrack and Trackmania stay fresh through players' tracks, and DashCraft.io is built on them. Mars Rally Championship has no player editor; its level editor is an in-house development tool.
Daily challenges. Trackmania's Track of the Day is a new community map each day at 19:00 CE(S)T, with its own 24-hour records board. Mars Rally Championship's daily is a date-seeded stage and sky, the same for everyone, with no board of its own. We found no daily mode in PolyTrack or DashCraft.io.
Time-trial racing games compared
What we compared: how a run restarts, medal or target times, which ghosts you can race, whether a leaderboard exists and how it is checked, whether players build tracks, and whether there is a daily challenge. Competitor details come from each game's own page, devlog, store listing or documentation, and "not confirmed" means none of them states it; Mars Rally Championship's come from its code. Trackmania and art of rally are downloads, included for comparison. Last checked: October 2026.
Mars Rally Championship is first because it is ours; the rest are grouped browser first, then downloads.

Mars Rally Championship: stage-rally time trials with checked leaderboards
Our game, listed first for that reason. This is Mars Rally Championship's own site; everything below it is grouped browser first, then downloads, and judged on its merits.
Mars Rally Championship is a free 3D rally game that runs in the browser with no download, no install and no account. Three stages are drivable today. Stage 1, The Eight, is a 2,676 m loop driven at night and a new pilot's first timed stage. Stage 2, The Long Run, is 2,306 m. Stage 3, The Opener, is 1,164 m and steep, and it is not a beginner stage. Touch controls cover phones and tablets, and a standard gamepad works too.
Every stage has three boards, forward, reversed and storm, shown 50 runs to a sheet on the leaderboard. Each row has REPLAY, which rebuilds the run from its inputs, and RACE, which puts its ghost beside you.
The checking sets the boards apart. Every run records its controls as an input tape of a few kilobytes, and replaying the tape through the same simulation reproduces the run bit for bit. The server does that with each submission: a tape that does not reproduce its checksums and finish is refused, and the posted time is the server's. The determinism behind it has its own write-up.
Two limits on that. The ghosts you race are 30 fps pose recordings, not the tape itself. And re-simulation proves a run is valid in the game's physics, not who was at the keyboard.
Medal times come from route length. On Stage 3, The Opener, the shortest stage, the ladder runs bronze 2:09.3, silver 1:33.1 and gold 1:12.8. It is the only stage with an author time, 1:04.0; Stages 1 and 2 have none set yet.
Screenshot: the site's Stages page; each drivable stage shows its route length beside gold, silver and bronze times worked out from it.
The limits are plain. There are only three stages and no player track editor. Even at gold pace a stage takes more than a minute, so a mistake on the last corner costs more of a re-run than in PolyTrack. A first load streams about 9 MB of terrain. The Stage 1 and Stage 3 boards restarted empty on 2026-10-11. Keyboard and touch brakes are all or nothing, while a gamepad trigger can feather.
Play free — no downloadPolyTrack: the best pure time attack in a tab
PolyTrack is a low-poly time-attack racer by the independent developer Kodub, free in a browser on itch.io, Poki and CrazyGames. Its devlog shows the loop growing: leaderboards in 0.3.0, replays, a filter that hides non-verified results and touch controls in 0.4.0 (29 July 2024), up to 10 ghosts at once in 0.5.0, and experimental multiplayer in 0.6.0 (10 March 2026).
At the pure time-attack loop, PolyTrack is better than Mars Rally Championship: more short tracks, a player editor and up to ten ghosts. We could not confirm medal times, or whether posting to its leaderboard needs an account. Games like PolyTrack and Trackmania scores five ingredients across eight browser racers.
DashCraft.io: every opponent is a ghost
DashCraft.io is a multiplayer racer on tracks built by other players. Its CrazyGames listing says every opponent is the ghost of another player who finished the track, and you beat their time to climb the leaderboard. A track builder offers road pieces, boosters, ramps, checkpoints and pylons. The listing shows a desktop-only browser game, released in February 2022 and last updated in October 2024.
We found no published method for checking times, and the restart key, medals, account requirement and mobile support are not confirmed.
Track Racer IO: early, but built around the lap
Track Racer IO is a free browser time-attack racer at trackracer.io. Each run saves a ghost of your fastest lap, you can race other players' ghosts, and leaderboards cover global, country and friends. The developer calls it rough and early, with levels where "some are literally broken". Mobile support is intended but not confirmed as tested, and the restart key, medals and any editor are not confirmed. One to watch.
Rally Point: checkpoints against target times
Rally Point is the closest browser relative to Mars Rally Championship's stage-rally format. Its CrazyGames listing describes five tracks, checkpoints that must be cleared in order or a barrier blocks you, and target times that unlock vehicles and tracks. It began as a Flash game in 2011, was updated as WebGL in 2019, and is listed for desktop only. Ghosts and a leaderboard are not confirmed. Rally Point 6 is a Windows download on itch.io, not a browser game.
Moto X3M: an obstacle course on a stopwatch
Moto X3M, made by MadPuffers, is the obstacle-course family at its simplest. Its Poki listing gives it 50 levels, with stars based entirely on finish time. A crash does not end a level but the clock keeps running, a front or back flip on a long jump cuts 0.5 seconds, and level 1 gives three stars at 13 seconds or less. Ghosts, a global leaderboard, touch controls and a restart key are not confirmed.
Two downloads that set the standard
Both are installs, included for comparison.
Trackmania (2020)
Trackmania is the deepest time attack there is. Starter access is free; Club access, $19.99 a year per its access page, adds every official campaign track, Track of the Day and clubs. There is no browser version, though it can be streamed into a tab, as Trackmania in a browser explains. Medal ghosts are available without Club, per Nadeo, while leaderboard ghosts need Club access. The catch is the install, and Club for the social parts.
art of rally
Funselektor Labs' art of rally is a top-down stage rally, the one to install for a stage-rally time trial. Store listings advertise daily and weekly challenges with leaderboards. The PlayStation and Switch versions arrived in August 2021, with PC earlier. It is paid, and the attempt rules for the dailies, the restart key and ghosts are not confirmed. For the wider rally shelf, see games like DiRT Rally.
Which time trial should you open first
If you want seconds-long tracks and an editor, open PolyTrack. At PolyTrack's own game, PolyTrack wins.
If you want other players' tracks, open DashCraft.io on a desktop. If flips and stars appeal more than lines, open Moto X3M.
If you want minutes-long stages and times checked before they post, open Mars Rally Championship. If you want the deepest scene and will install it, pick Trackmania.
