Rally Games for Beginners: The Best Ones to Start With

Mars Rally Championship, a free browser rally game with a Proving Ground tutorial, is listed first here because it is ours. Beyond it, the best rally games for beginners are art of rally, for its forgiving top-down stages, and EA Sports WRC, whose Rally School and assists teach real rally. Forza Horizon 5's Rally Adventure is the gentlest, with auto-steering and rewind. DiRT Rally 2.0 is the step after, not the start.

What makes a rally game good for beginners?

Four things matter more than how realistic the physics are.

  • A tutorial that teaches rally. Not just which button is the brake, but how a timed stage works and what to do at a corner.
  • Assists you can switch off one at a time. Traction control, anti-lock brakes and auto gears should be separate toggles, so you can drop them as you improve.
  • A way back from a mistake. A rewind, an instant restart, or a reset to the last checkpoint. Rally punishes errors for the rest of the stage, and a newcomer makes plenty.
  • Controls you already own. A gamepad, a keyboard or a phone. A wheel is a nice extra, not an entry fee.

Most "best rally games" lists rank realism first and then call the top sim beginner-friendly. This list sorts by how each game eases you in instead. For what the sport itself asks of a driver, see what is rally racing.

Read the table by the second column. The top of the list gives you a tutorial or a forgiving view; the middle gives you assists and a rewind; the last game warns that one mistake can end a stage and expects you to arrive ready. Rush Rally 3 is the entry whose controls are designed for touch and tilt, and Mars Rally Championship is the only one you can open without installing anything.

The best rally games for beginners

Mars Rally Championship: a free Proving Ground, then The Long Run

Our game, listed first for that reason. This is Mars Rally Championship's own site; everything below it is ranked on how well it eases a newcomer in.

Mars Rally Championship is a free 3D rally game that runs in the browser, with no download, no account and no ads. The Proving Ground is the first thing a new pilot is offered: six lessons (drive, shift up, brake, corners, slalom, hairpin) and a timed mini-race on a closed loop of about 2.5 km. Its finale starts the first real race on Stage 2, The Long Run. Skip it and Stage 2 starts anyway.

Mars Rally Championship in-game screenshot: the WELCOME TO MARS card a new pilot sees on opening the game, offering LEARN THE ROPES, the tutorial, as the highlighted choice, or SKIP TO STAGE 2, over the dimmed game scene

In-game screenshot: the first thing a new pilot sees, a choice between the Proving Ground tutorial and skipping straight to Stage 2.

The help continues after the lessons. Before each of your first 10 solo races a CONTROLS card shows the keys, pad or touch layout for the device in your hands, and the first three open on a 15-second Cornering 101 clip. Before your third finish, the ghost on track on a forward board is a pace car: the slowest run on the board that still made bronze pace, tagged "FOLLOW IT". On forward runs an on-screen call strip shows the next corner, an advised speed and a BRAKE cue. Press T and the rover returns to the last gate cleared, though the clock keeps running.

What it does badly for a beginner, plainly. There is one handling for everyone, with ABS and traction control built in and nothing to switch on or off. There is no rewind. Mars braking from 100 km/h takes about 125 m, more than twice the 52 m of Earth gravel, so corners have to be planned rather than flicked. Keyboard and touch brakes are all or nothing; only a gamepad trigger can feather. Phones finished 2.7% of first drives against 8.1% on desktops between 29 September and 28 October 2026, so start on a computer if you can. And it is one rover on four stages, in development.

It suits anyone who wants to learn what a timed stage feels like before spending money. The full walk-through is in the Mars Rally Championship beginner's guide.

art of rally: the friendliest first rally game

art of rally, from Funselektor Labs, teaches the rally loop with the least noise: one car, a timed stage, and the need to carry momentum. The view is top-down, which hides the hard part of rally, reading a corner at speed from the driver's seat, and leaves the part a newcomer can learn first. Its own site promises "beginner-friendly options" through to modes for expert drivers, though it does not list the individual assists, so we will not either.

It has 60 stages in Career and more than 50 cars from the 1960s to Group B, S and A. It lists at $24.99 on Steam, with full controller support, and is also sold for Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, iOS and Android. The trade-off is that a top-down view is a different skill from the cockpit view of the 3D games below. It suits a calm first rally game on almost any device. For similar picks, see games like art of rally.

EA Sports WRC: Rally School and assists, the real thing

EA Sports WRC has a dedicated rally tutorial: Rally School, reached from the main menu, a series of short lessons with objectives and target times on gravel, asphalt and snow. EA's own beginner's guide suggests starting on asphalt, then gravel, then snow, and starting in the Junior WRC class with the Ford Fiesta Rally3.

The assist suite is broad: traction control, anti-lock brakes, stability control, automatic gears and off-throttle braking, plus a Simplified Pace Notes option that swaps the co-driver's numbers for "Easy, Medium, Sharp". AI strength runs 0 to 100, with 50 as the suggested start. EA also notes that the fastest times tend to come with the assists off, which makes the suite a ramp rather than a crutch. It lists at $49.99, on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. In April 2025 EA said it was pausing plans for future rally titles while keeping this one on sale. It suits anyone who wants to learn real rally and has a console or PC.

Forza Horizon 5 Rally Adventure: rally with the stabilisers on

Forza Horizon 5 has the most help of any game here. Its Driving Assists Preset runs from Easy to Ultimate, steering can be set to Auto-Steering, which lets you drive without steering where a driving line is set, and braking can be Assisted, which tries to slow you for corners. Rewind reverses time to a point you choose, per GameAccess's settings write-up.

The catch is cost and character. The Rally Adventure expansion lists at $19.99 and needs the $59.99 base game, so rally starts at about $80. It sends you through the Sierra Nueva in purpose-built rally cars, but Horizon is an open-world festival at heart, and we have not confirmed that the expansion is point-to-point stage rally. It suits a player who wants maximum help and is fine with rally as a side dish.

DIRT 5: arcade off-road for the sofa

DIRT 5 is arcade off-road racing, "a fun, amplified" take by its own listing, with more than 70 routes across 10 locations on gravel, ice, snow and sand, and rally icons alongside trucks. It lists at $59.99. Its standout for a newcomer is company: local split-screen for up to four players, Career included, plus online for up to 12.

We could not confirm a tutorial or assist list on its store page, so we claim neither. It teaches little about stage rally itself, and suits a living-room evening rather than a first lesson.

Rush Rally 3: rally on a phone

Rush Rally 3 is a simulation-style rally game made by one person, with rallies, rallycross and hill climbs across 11 countries and more than 20 cars that can be upgraded and tuned. For a beginner the draw is its control system, which its developer describes as fully customisable for touch and tilt: you place the controls where you want them. It also supports MFi controllers.

It runs on iOS, Android and Switch, and lists at $14.99 on Steam. A free demo exists on Steam and on Google Play, so you can test the touch layout before paying. We have not confirmed any driving assists, so judge the demo yourself. It suits someone whose only gaming device is a phone.

DiRT Rally 2.0: where to go next, not where to start

DiRT Rally 2.0 is the one several lists tell beginners to start with, and it is a fine game. Its store page is honest about it, though: "the smallest mistake could end your stage". Operation Sports, a competitor, files it under sim racing for beginners only if that means a manageable way into the discipline rather than immunity from mistakes. That is a fair summary.

It lists at $19.99 with full controller support. We could not confirm a rally school or an assist menu on its pages. It makes sense as your second game after EA Sports WRC or art of rally; for the details on its support status, see games like DiRT Rally.

Do you need a steering wheel for rally games?

No. EA says that in EA Sports WRC it has "seen players set World Record times with all three control methods", meaning wheel, gamepad and keyboard. art of rally lists full controller support, DiRT Rally 2.0 does too, and Rush Rally 3 is built for touch and tilt. Mars Rally Championship plays on a keyboard, a gamepad or a touch screen, and a gamepad trigger is the only way to feather the brake there.

If you are starting on a pad, playing browser racing games with a controller covers the setup. Buy a wheel later if rally takes hold, not before.

Which stage should a beginner start on in Mars Rally Championship?

Stage 2, The Long Run. The site marks it START HERE, the Proving Ground hands off to it, and skipping the tutorial starts it. It is Stage 2 on the stages page, a 2,306 m line through 12 checkpoints. The ground drops from 105 m to 85 m in the first 330 m, then holds between 85 m and 94 m. There are two real corners, about 35 to 40 degrees, between the 500 m and 700 m marks; every other bend is under 25 degrees.

That makes it the gentlest ground of the open stages, with no bend over 40 degrees. It is not a pushover: bronze at 4:16.3 is a steady 9 m/s, silver is 3:04.5 and gold is 2:24.2, and Mars braking still punishes a late stab at the pedal. The racing line is mapped in the Stage 2 line guide.

Stage 3, The Opener, is the shortest at 1,164 m, which tempts newcomers. It is not the place to start: its two tightest corners come 51 m and 75 m off the start line, down a steep descent.
